NUCLEAR ENERGY
Making a Case for Nuclear Energy
OP ED BY: RON GRAHAM — ATI Wah Chang

The industrialization of China and India, in addition to increasing energy consumption in developed nations, is placing incredible demands on existing energy and natural resource reserves. It is becoming increasingly clear that hard constraints on energy supplies and demand are being reached. There are also many political and personal-choice restraints being placed on different methods of producing energy. We are coming to the time when these self-defeating restraints will no longer be acceptable. Now is the time when we need to fully explore and embrace all viable forms of energy production and recognize the place each of these energy forms has in the overall solution to the world’s energy crisis...

Corrosion Solutions® Conference Call for Papers: Park City, Utah — September 20-24, 2009

ATI Wah Chang is pleased to announce its seventh international Corrosion Solutions® Conference which will take place at the Canyons Resort in Park City, Utah September 20-24, 2009.

This conference follows the successful Corrosion Solutions Conference held in September 2007 that covered topics ranging from the performance of zirconium, titanium, tantalum, niobium and specialty steels in corrosive environments to various aspects concerning the design, fabrication and maintenance of processing equipment. Attendees represented companies from 22 countries and included participants from the chemical processing, mineral processing and oil & gas industries, as well as fabricators, engineering contractors and academia.

The 2009 event will provide the latest information on working with various materials of construction, such as stainless steels, nickel alloys, titanium, niobium, tantalum and zirconium, and will cover a broad spectrum of aqueous corrosive applications. At this time, we have preliminary commitments for technical papers from some of the world’s premier chemical companies and major fabricators...

CHEMICAL PROCESSING
Materials for Future Chemical Plant Concepts
BY: JÜRGEN KORKHAUS — BASF Aktiengesellschaft

The chemical process industry has always been innovative regarding the application of materials for its production plants. As indicated in Figure 1, it seems as if there has always been an inherent synergy between the realization of specific processes and the production of specific products in the chemical industry, and the development and market introduction of corrosion resistant alloys. In some instances in the past, the availability of alloys able to resist the corrosive, thermal and mechanical process conditions made it possible to bring production processes to an industrial scale. Especially in the sixties and the seventies of the last century highly corrosion resistant materials like the original alloy-B and alloy-C were developed and the Mo-content in steels was increased to 5-6% just to fulfill the market demands of the chemical process industry...
