ATI Wah Chang Hosts Reactive Metal Corrosion and Welding Seminars Around the World
BY: STEVE SPARKOWICH — ATI Wah Chang

In 2008, ATI Wah Chang’s Technical Services Department had the pleasure of hosting Corrosion Solutions® Seminars and Titanium & Zirconium Welding Seminars at locations in Texas, Louisiana, China, India and our production facility in Albany, Oregon. Over 135 industry participants from ExxonMobil, LyondellBasell, Babcock & Wilcox, Freeport-McMoRan, and many others attended.

Seminars benefit a wide range of participants including: chemical, design, metallurgical and materials engineers, fabricators, maintenance personal and a wide variety of other professionals seeking detailed information about corrosion, welding and fabrication of specialty alloys like titanium, zirconium, niobium, and tantalum.

Participants in the ATI Wah Chang Titanium and Zirconium Welding Seminars who have welding experience are given two days of hands-on training during the seminar.

Corrosion Solutions® Seminars focus on helping participants make technically and economically sound decisions when selecting and working with reactive metals for corrosive applications. The seminars provide information on numerous topics including:

  • History, primary uses, and production processes
  • Physical and metallurgical properties
  • Materials specifications and availability
  • Corrosion properties & applications
  • Forming, machining, casting, welding, heat treatment and chemical conditioning fabrication processes
  • Equipment design issues
  • Project management
  • Maintenance and chemical cleaning
  • Case histories
  • Safety
  • Material guides and reference tools

Our Titanium & Zirconium Welding Seminars consist of classroom instruction and welding demonstration on the first day, followed by hands-on gas-tungsten arc welding (GTAW) on days two and three. The first day of the welding seminar is open to beginning welders, welding inspectors, engineers, managers, technicians, metallurgists, maintenance personnel, and fabricators. The second and third days feature hands-on weld training and has been developed for experienced GTAW welders. At the beginning of the second day, don’t be surprised if you hear Dennis Kelly, ATI Wah Chang’s weld shop instructor, tell the class: “You cannot leave until you make good titanium and zirconium welds!”

Steve Sparkowich (above), Senior Applications Engineer and Rick Sutherlin (below), Technical Services Manager are actively involved in the curriculum development and instructional aspects of the Corrosion Solutions® and Welding Seminars hosted by ATI Wah Chang.

The seminar curriculum qualifies for Continuing Education (CE) credits and was developed to give registrants the knowledge they need to stay competitive in their field. Participants gain critical knowledge that will save their company time and money, help them gain operational efficiencies, and reduce maintenance costs and down time. Seminar pricing varies depending on the location but is always economically priced; ATI Wah Chang guarantees participants will never pay more than it takes to cover the cost of the seminar.
